Extension grade thermocouples have wider tolerances. Generally, they are used in friendlier environments and do not use higher-performance insulation and/or jackets.

Thermocouple wire can be furnished in shielded and non-shielded, jacketed and non-jacketed configurations.

In tough applications, stainless steel braid or interlock armor tubing is sometimes used to offer excellent mechanical protection.

14-, 16-, 20-, and 24-gauge thermocouple wire sizes are generally available, with 20 AWG being the most popular.
